Jim,

My first thoughts are:-
1. Is it a fake?
2. Is the second crown a mark from the watermark of another stamp that was impressed on it?

If a genuine usage then an interesting discovery. I would have thought the paper would have been used on other plates in usage at the same time and appear on stamps lettered IJ.

The earliest recorded date for Plate 85 is 16 December 1848 and it was defaced or taken from press on 6 March 1850. That gives quite a number of plates on which the double watermark could appear, from Plate 80 to Plate 92 or thereabouts. Does the postmark type help narrow down that window?
