New RPSL Publication: Perkins Bacon Great Britain Line-Engraved Postage Stamp Printing 1840–1846 by Alan Druce FRPSL
After five years of meticulous research in archives, this definitive book is now ready for publication. As well as the Perkins Bacon Records and the Postal Museum, many hours have been spent looking at primary sources in the British Library, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Archives at Kew. The information gleaned has been meticulously analysed and the full story told in more detail than ever before. The work is in two hard-bound volumes, each of 624 pages. It is Volume 2 that will be heavily used by aficionados of GB Line-Engraved stamps as it contains tables that define precisely how many sheets were printed from which plate by which printer on which day. These volumes give philatelists a previously un-published level of detail of the first six years of stamp production.
The books will be printed over the summer, and it is anticipated that they will be available for the first meeting of the new season. The normal retail price of this two-volume book will be £125, however a special price reduction is available to anyone who orders by 23 July 2018. The price before that date is £112 to non-members and £99 to RPSL members. From 24 July 2018, the members’ price will be £112.
A special limited edition leather bound version is being offered. This has a fixed price of £300 per two-book set. See the website for more details.
If ordering from overseas, please carefully read the information on delivery costs that are provided on the website.

Alan’s book is now at the printers (Pardys) and all being well ink will start hitting paper today. To keep the cost down, there is almost no margin for the Royal in the pricing. This will only work if we get the number produced right: hence the pre-order arrangements of a special ‘early-bird’ deal by 23 July. Only those orders made before the cut-off, plus a small number for stock, will be bound.
I do have a ‘near final’ paper draft copy, and I’m delighted to report that Steve Walker (Windsor Philatelics) has kindly agreed to have this on the corner of his stand at York for anyone to inspect. This is covered in annotations, all of which have been incorporated into the final product. Three Mulreadites undertook a valuable peer review on the section on 1Q 1841 repairs since this draft was printed, so this version doesn’t reflect those important changes.
To recap: the book has two volumes, each 624 pages. Price for the set up to 23 July 2018 = £112 retail, £99 to RPSL members. The price after 23 July will be £125 retail, £112 members. Delivery in the UK = £10; delivery overseas is complicated – see the website!
Order through the RPSL website www.rpsl.org.uk – but don’t forget to logon as a member to get your discount automatically.
