1937 Coronation Pre-release covers/cards

Post by bathgate123456 »

I've just read Robin Restall's very interesting & informative article on the 1937 Coronation stamp - Pre-release Cancellations in the GBPS Newsletter 348 and thought that I would share a couple of items from my collection.

The first is an unaddressed cover with the 1937 Coronation stamp postmarked at Bishopbriggs (sub office near Glasgow) on 12th May 1937. It is obviously philatelic in nature & probably cancelled to favour.

The second is a postcard of Edinburgh sent to Brenchley, Kent, postmarked on the 11th May 1937, 2 days before date of issue. The text of the card suggests that it was written on board a train from Edinburgh to, probably, London, with the card posted when the train stopped at Doncaster. As the train left Edinburgh at 8.30am on the 11th, the stamp may have been purchased on the 10th May? Would there have been a post office open prior to 8.30am?

I have attached scans of both items for your perusal.

All offices would have received their supply of stamps 7 days prior to the date of issue, and most sorting offices in those days worked on a 24 hour basis.
