I was having novice's posting experience when #707 was logged!!! What I really wanted to say was:-

Does anyone else have the same interest as myself, i.e. Coil Leaders and associated material?

I collect up to the end of the Wilding period and am currently studying the differences in Roll Number locations, and Type settings, but collect any
varieties, whether they be on stamps, leaders, or ends.

If anyone out there has a shared interest, or any material on which they can pass on information, it would be nice to hear from you. Dave.

By the way what am I supposed to type in the 'Quote' box above ?

I notice I am not the only tentative user of this Discussion Board, and I see Robin has generated a number of duplicates - are they for sale Robin ?

On the matter of coils - for the interest of davecox and Robin T. As Robin mentioned I collect the Pre-decimal Machins, and have around 200 different coil leaders, which I have not added to in the last three or four years now, you just do not see them around. You should have more luck with the Wildings as they are advertised more often.

Jim Bond down in Devon was a good source of leaders for me, but not in the last maybe 8 years. Doug Myall as Robin says, is extremely knowledgeable, but his booklet on the subject was produced a long time ago. I have a copy, but cannot put my hands on it right now.

There are many variations in the typesetting, the colour of the leader, the translucency of the paper and so on. It depends how engrossed you are as to how far you pursue it. I know Robin looked into flourescence to an infinite degree, but not many people followed him all the way, and as a result there was limited interest in his findings.

These highly specialised studies are extremely stimulating and satisfying to the individuals involved, but unless they have a reasonable following dealers, catalogue editors and others are unlikely to give them column inches.

I suggest davecox writes to the Newsletter with his request for information. I'm not sure if the amalgamated Machin Society now handles the Wildings - I would hope somebody does as they are a fascinating issue.

Cheers

Douglas Myall's book on coil leaders is now available free at his web site at http://www.deegam.com/priced_cat.htm.

Oops! Somehow the above link didn't work out correctly. Type it in manually to end with the htm (without the final period) or just go to www.deegam.com and click on the big number 4.

As an old man not used to modern technology - I make many mistakes!!!!!
Anyone who wants my duplicates can have them
BUT - still the question remains.
I have a stamp with two differing opinions and apparently no one else to turn to.
I have long since given up on Machins - lack of money and lack of interest in what I think about them anyway.
Now I have a few scattered remnants and those include that stamp!
For solace I have turned to the stamps of the Channel Islands - they are not part of Great Britain but are part of the British Isles and in my view their stamps should form some part of a GB collection.
I did a study of Regional stamps when they were issued, but did not continue it into Country Definites - but stamps, although issued by someone other than the Post Office ie CI authorities, should be considered as GB!!

Not least because the first issues were printed by Harrison
and are as interesting as any other GB stamps.
Now doing a specialised study of Guernsey Booklets

A footnote - there is a conspicuous lack of interest in Machins now. The new(?) society formed by amalgamation is becoming moribund and most dealersare going back to Wildings and earlier.
Poor state of affairs, but the expense of just buying one of each has become prohibitive for most.

Those who come after us will wonder what happened - why are we so backward looking?

Larry advised that the Deegam book on coils/leaders was available on line.
We took advantage of that and downloaded it and what a fantastic resource
and how generous of Doug to make it available on line for free.
Such a wealth of information and illustrations and it will be such a boon to
us with the collection of leaders we have.
Many thanks to all involved.
Ron and Eunice.

earsathome, could you post the URL for the Deegam book download? I'd certainly like to get some information on the immediate pre- and post-decimal versions.

Hi Mozzerb,
As Larry advised I just went to
http://www.deegam.com
and clicked on the big number 4.
It did not take too long to download and we are still on dial up, so if you are broadband it would be even quicker.
An incredible resource and it will be invaluable to us.
Cheers

earsathome and mozzerb.
I have also downloaded the Deegam catalogue, I've had a hard copy since it was first published.
About a month ago I bought a new copy from G. Barrington Smith, Cross Street, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 4DD, tel 01162 719181, as my original is parting at the seams. As a clearance lot it was £3.95, trade. So if you want one, and know a dealer you may still be able to get one. If you get stuck let me know and I will do it for you at cost plus postage.

Dave,
Thanks for that - does G Barrington Smith have an e-mail address do you know?
Being in Australia makes it hard to get reference books for this type of thing locally. A dealer on the Gold Coast handles such things as S.G. Concise but the Deegam is a bit esoteric for them I think.
I can drop G.B.S. an e-mail if he does have one to see if he still has a copy available.
Regards.

ears,
I spoke too soon! After posting last night I rang GBS today only to be told they had no more Deegam Coil Catalogues left, so you will have to make do with your download
I will come back to you later regarding the contents of your site etc. Regards, Dave.
