Rate for Printed Matter UK to USA 1873 & 1891

Post by leamphil »

I want to find details of the Newspaper (printed matter) rate from the UK to the USA up to the introduction of the UPU rates on 1st July 1892.

I've got an example from 1873 that is franked with 1d and another in 1891 that has ½d.

A pointer to somewhere to look would be great ?

UK inland and overseas letter_rates_v1-1 by Colin Tabeart revised by Oliver is the book for you that is available electronically on the internet.
The newspaper tax that paid for postage was reduced to 1d in 1836. I'm not sure if that first applied to the USA from the time of the 1848 convention (Article XV) or from 1836.
Then on 30th September 1890 the newspaper rate was reduced to a halfpenny.
You can see some of the yearly rates in the Postmaster General's reports from 1854 to 1879 on the GBPS website page at http://www.gbps.org.uk/information/down ... -documents.
