Information needed on Windsor postmark 1794

Post by earsathome »

The seller had this notation
"Curved convex Windsor, 41mmx 5mm, used in the first recorded year"

We have no reference to this at all in our books, the nearest being on page 18 of Willcocks for Cambridge, (which is described as convex), but there is no mention of Windsor at all. We have asked the seller - a well known dealer in England, but have had no response to our queries.

Can anyone help please?

Hi Ron and Eunice

The mark is listed in Willcocks & Jay, BCC, Vol. 4, p. 12 as convex (although it's not clear which way is convex and which way is concave!).

WINDSOR convex 41 x 5 Black 1794–00 D

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Hello Mike,

Many thanks indeed for that swift response, just what we needed to know.
We only have the BCC Vol 3 which is London and the Willcocks Postal History of Great Britain and Ireland. Plus of course Collect British Postmarks.

We may have to look for more reference catalogues<grin>
