Apologies if we've been here before. Alcock suggests that this represents 'Paid Letter', while more recent information (auction cats, dealers' stock) etc lists it as 'Paid Late'...no info in the Willcocks and Jay County Catalogue ..or elsewhere that I can see. A colleague in Austria has recently unearthed a cover with it (alone) cancelling the 1d red. Anyone any info/ideas?

Generally accepted as 'Posted Late' i.e. Too Late for the day's post - there's no indication of a late fee being involved. Recorded 1840-48 although I have an example from 1849.
