Post cards

I am looking for info on the three pence "British Empire" postcard issued in the 1890s. It is rarely seen used and I believe it was intended for use to Australia and NZ, but although I have lived in Aus for 40 years I have never seen one used to that destination. I have two commercially used examples - both to Germany - although a one penny postcard would have sufficed to that destination. "Collect British Postal Stationery" prices the used card at 250 pounds so it was clearly not used much. Does anyone know why it was issued and why it is so scarce in used condition?

That's exactly why it was issued -- there was a fairly short-lived 3d postcard rate to Australasia, and examples of correct use are indeed rare. I have seen them, although I don't have one (although I do have a 2d postcard uprated with a 1d stamp). Unfortunately, I don't have the dates handy!
