Type 1844 Identification help

Post by Galveston »

Not much to go on here, but looking for a little help. This one came to me marked as ' 590 '. Ive looked at Type 1844 590 which is Odiham / Hampshire. But the top serif of the 5 is straight and my seems to look curved. 690 is Saxmundham / Suffolk. But the 6 has a ball terminus.

What's mine - 590 or 690? Maybe the ' 6 ' didnt get a full strike , missing the ball terminus end?

What about 890 (Windsor, 1844-1962) with a badly printed 8?

Thank you Mike. Id not thought of that one. I'll revisit this when I get back to the office.

Getting to the point where is might be an unknown -

Im pretty sure its a Plate 170 & 890 Windsor was Aug 1851 last known use I think - if im reading it right. 690 SAXMUNDHAM goes to 1860 and it just doesnt look like a 5, 590 ... Hope im on the right track ! The first digit being missing I think thats the best I can do :?

William, not sure if this helps but Bill Barrell has this on a Saxmundham cover on his website

Tom Slemons has a picture of 690 in his Suffolk book but the serif of the 6 doesn't show.

Yes - very helpful! Thank you tons for the follow up and the idea of imaging the 2 together. And, a reminder to keep on keeping on. I appreciate the follow up and just what I needed to end the day. :)
