High Values - Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II

Introduction

Max has been collecting high value stamps since boyhood, when his doctor father, irritated by the requirement to pay prescription charges with high value stamps on a form (see Frame 16), donated him an example of the 1 "Festival" issue. This display was created to show the varied usage of the stamps through the years.

It begins with the first Queen Victoria high value issues of 1867 and continues through the reigns for a century of high values, the last item chronologically being a mixed franking of sterling and decimal Machins on a High Value Packet label. Notable items include one of the handful of known examples of the 1880 2s brown on cover, a Parcel Post piece showing the use of twelve 1 stamps and a 5 orange, and no less than nine usages of the PUC 1 on cover (Frame 9).

The Seahorse usages include multiple usages, many on airmails (including the emergency internal airmail during the rail strike of 1919 and the experimental airmail express service to Paris in 1919-20), and a range of labels for diplomatic bags.

Other sections include the use of high value postage dues, telegraphic and fiscal usages (including the obliteration and punching of stamps to reduce the attraction of fine used examples to collectors), and a section on the combined parcel post and customs duty labels used in the Channel Islands.
