Official Documents

Official publications from the Post Office or other branches of the government, containing much information on the posts of the time. See also "Penny Postage" for documents specifically relating to that subject.

Parliamentary Reports and Returns

Reports of the Postmaster General on the Post Office

These reports were produced annually from 1855, and contain summaries of the main postal developments of the preceding year, together with postal statistics, and often unusual "stories". They have information which is not easy to find elsewhere.

If you have the missing report in the sequence below (No. 52) or indeed later ones from No. 56 onwards, we would be very glad to have them!

QEII Cylinder and Plate Data from The Postal Museum

Data from the archive files in sections POST 52/735 to POST 52/744, which contain details of all cylinders and plates, even those withdrawn due to being unsuitable. The details include in most cases the date placed into stock, the date scrapped, total number of impressions and the negative and positives used. Master dies and transfer roller details are listed for recess-printed stamps. Transcribed by Peter Shaw.
