John McCulloch's site
Index to Plating the Penny - John A. McCulloch has developed a remarkably effective tool for creating a short-list of possible
plates from a set of Brown/Fisher measurements. Postmark town finder - John also has a useful
search tool which lists possible towns from just a few letters on a
19th century postmark.

MJ Publications – Penny Black first day covers

Penny Black First Day Covers
Although issued on 1 May 1840 in London, the Penny Black (together with the Twopenny Blue and Mulreadys)
was not valid for postage until 6 May 1840, which is thus not the first day of issue but rather the first
day of official use. This link will take you to a listing of 86 covers and pieces ostensibly used on
6 May 1840. Some of these are of doubtful authenticity. Of those which seem genuine 71 have recorded towns
of origin: 52 are from London, 7 from Liverpool, 10 from the rest of Britain and 2 from Scotland.
