Rereading the 1901 notice properly, it says that all stamps prior to the 1881 "postage and revenue" stamps are invalidated from 1st June 1901.

So the 1880 1d Venetian Red was invalid from 1st June 1901.

Yes it is 1852 - there is also a receiving mark on the reverse which is clearly 1852.

I have an envelope from the UK to Geneva dated 20th January 1852 which was prepaid 1/4d and appears to go via France.

I find that in Oxley the rate from December 1845 was 11d for under 1/4 oz.

Can anyone please cast any light on the 1/4d rate, was it perhaps the next weight step ?

As you were - very close examination of the bottom of the hammer shows what could be part of a "4" - this hammer is known used until 12th August 1907 and matches the arcs in the four corners (in particular the 2 arcs in the top left corner).

Further, applying a little basic maths, if one takes off the 1d for the Bristol Penny Post, then 5/5d = 65d is only factored by 5 and 13, so I think it has to be a 5x multiplier of a 13d or 1/1d rate.
