The standard reference books for registered envelopes are British Postal Stationery by Alan Huggins (1970/71) and Collect British Postal Stationery by Alan Huggins and Colin Baker (2007). The former is much more detailed but harder to follow, and obviously doesn't include the decimal issues or new information.

The most detailed listing of GB registration labels available is probably in Registered Mail of the British Isles by James Mackay (1982). The US Postal Label Study Group did a Worldwide Registration Label Catalog, but I don't know how good their GB listing is.

Unfortunately, all of these are out of print, although the GB books at least should be locatable from dealers/eBay. A revised version of Collect British Postal Stationery is in train and may be issued as downloadable PDFs, but that may not be for a year or two.
