British Post Offices in Brazil

Post by Theo »

I was confronted with a questions a couple of days ago which I could not find a decisive answer to. For a specialised catalogue of Brazil which is due to be published in 2013 the editor asked me whether I could give him a definite answer when the British Post Offices in Brazil (Rio de Janiero, Bahia and Pernambuco) were closed. There seem to be two possible dates (years) in question. The first year is 1874 which is the one that I would prefer. I looked through the relevant sections in the Glassco-Collection and the Bollen-Collection and could not find any dates later than 1874. Brumell also mentions 1874 as does my old Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue of 1992. The editor mentions though that some Brazilian sources mention 1877 as the closing year for these Post Offices. Has anybody got an idea which is the correct year?

Theo, according to Parmenter's GB Used Abroad (1993), it was 30 June 1874 (and he gives two contemporary references - see image).

Theo, I have in my library the Post Office estimates for the year ending 31 March 1974 and attach a scan of the relevant page. Unfortunately this is the latest volume I have.
The poundage on the sale of postage labels will give a good idea on the rarity of the GB stamps used abroad.

Have now located the closure date of the British Post Offices in Brazil. It was the 30 June 1874.This is from GB Used Abroad: Cancellations and Postal markings by John Parmenter published by the Postal history Society in 1993. He includes three pages on the closure, quoting from official correspondence. The date of 1877 was based on when Brazil joined the postal union and was presumed by earlier authors. Did you notice on the estimates list a agent was listed at Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
