CDS on reverse of Kirby Lonsdale Letter?

Post by Richudson »

Please would anybody be able to tell me what the location of the CDS in the reverse corner of this letter to Kirby Lonsdale, it looks to me something like BURROW WESTMP JY 31 1855 A?

I would suggest...

BURTON WESTMD

WESTMD is the abbreviated form of Westmorland. Burton is now called Burton-in-Kendal

I agree Burton-in-Kendal (just a few miles west of Kirkby Lonsdale) which is indicated as a post town on the 1838 Select Committee map. Best wishes, Mike

I can't quite make out the letter code on the Kirkby Lonsdale and the Burton WestMd datestamps. But is it possible the envelope is to Burton-in-Kendal rather than Kirkby Lonsdale?
