Repairs of the 1d Imperf Plate 8 and a Revised Print Record

Introduction

Scope of the Display

My display exhibits original and later states of impressions from imperforate penny plate 8, also focussing on dated covers to demonstrate that a later currently unrecorded printing from the plate occurred following the 3rd or final repair.

Introduction

Plate 8 was first printed in black on 31 July 1840 by the printer McMurdie and at some point in 1840 underwent a repair to two letterings only (GE and HE) before red ink was adopted on 4 January 1841. The plate underwent two further repair stages during its lifetime, the 2nd or provisional repair just prior to the final provisional black p·rinting of January/February 1841 consisting of 11 letterings and resulting in the very scarce provisional black issue and finally somewhat later the 3rd or final repair to some 93 letterings in red only.

I consider that there was insufficient time during the recorded printing period (Ref. Druce) for so many late repairs to have occurred with few gaps in McMurdie's daily print record to allow many of these 93 repairs to have been undertaken and my display demonstrates from the evidence of dated material that a later currently unrecorded period of printing occurred following the 3rd or final repair.

From this research I attempt to establish new information on when the final repair likely occurred and propose a revised sheet count for plate 8 currently recorded by Druce and the Specialised SG Catalogue.
