Meter Franking: First Type Meter Marks

Introduction

The first type of postage meter marks (known to meter collectors as 'Design A') appeared in 1922 when meter franking was introduced in Great Britain.

Although the second type ('Design B') appeared in 1927, the first type continued in use for many more years (asthere was no requirement to replace old franking dies).

The classification of meter marks in this exhibit is based on the make and model of the machine that made them.

Three different manufacturers were involved:
  • PITNEY-BOWES
  • UNIVERSAL POSTAL FRANKERS
  • NEOPOST

Note: this display was one of the King George V themed exhibits that were entered to support the Royal Philatelic Society's 150th anniversary celebrations at Spring Stampex 2019. It received a Large Gold Medal
