Stanton Booklet Listing Cards

Lt-Col. J.B.M.Stanton (always known as Colonel Stanton), was the doyen of GB booklet collectors, and the first GBPS Vice-President. Unfortunately, he died prematurely in 1959. From 1940-54 he was a major contributor to the British Philatelist, the journal of Chas. Nissen & Co. (a major dealer at the time). In 1957, he co-authored Part Four (George V issues) of The Postage Stamps of Great Britain with K. M. Beaumont.

Stanton began working for Nissen c.1943, and so saw extraordinary quantities of booklets – the cards recorded what he saw. This clearly included material from De La Rue, Harrisons, and Sells Ltd (contractors for booklet advertising). From 1934, he noted photogravure cylinders, the booklets they were seen in, and the perforators used. This has identified the origin of many rare panes from the vertical reserve perforator carried over from the letterpress period.

In 1994, his collection was sold; abbreviated information noted on the reverse of many cards can be cross checked against the album pages, where available.
