Hand-painted sheet showing proposal for the layout of the 4d green and brown 'Jubilee'

Dummy sheet sent on 12/1/1888 by De La Rue to Mr Purcell at Somerset House to illustrate their first proposal for the layout of the 4d printing plate. The perforated sheet shows eight light brown watercolour painted panels (indicating four rows of two panes, each comprising 4 rows of 5 stamps). Two long horizontal blocks, one brown and one green (the brown one closest to the panel) appear below the top and third rows of panels, and above the second and bottom rows. Between each pair of panels are twenty-three short horizontal blocks, painted green and brown alternately (starting and ending with green). The blocks are all outlined with a darker shade of the same colour. The bottom two panels have green and brown marginal lines of rule around the top and the facing sides, which extend down the outside and across the bottom of the panel along the length/width of one stamp. Pencil markings indicate original draft lines at various point. Two 4d green and brown 'Jubilee' stamps have been pasted on, one in the top right hand corner of the bottom left hand pane and the other in the top left hand corner of the bottom right hand pane, both are diagonally marked 'Cancelled' in black script. The bottom left hand corner label of the top right hand pane shows adhesive residue. '2 FEB 88' is rubber stamped in the top left hand corner of the sheet.

Dummy sheet produced by De La Rue to illustrate amendments to their first proposal for the layout of the 4d printing plate. The perforated sheet shows eight light brown watercolour painted panels (indicating four rows of two panes, each comprising 4 rows of 5 stamps). Between each of the top three pairs of panels are twenty-one short horizontal blocks, painted brown and green alternately (starting and ending with brown). Between the bottom pair of panels are twenty-three short horizontal blocks, painted green and brown alternately (starting and ending with green). The blocks are all outlined with a darker shade of the same colour. Two short horizontal blocks, one brown and one green (the brown one closest to the panel) appear below the left hand pane on the third row of panels, and above the left hand pane of the bottom row, extending across the width of two stamps on the right hand side of the panes. Pencil markings indicate original draft lines and alterations at various point. Between the third and fourth rows of panes is written 'On the sheet sent to Mr Purcell, all four filling-in pieces were like the above. It was only after reconsideration that I had the under slip altered on this sheet in order to show how the slips will have to be dealt with in the new plates with border lines.' Two 4d green and brown 'Jubilee' stamps have been pasted on in the top right hand corner of the bottom left hand pane and in the top left hand corner of the bottom right hand pane, both are diagonally marked 'Cancelled' in black script. A card has been pasted on to the top right hand side of the reverse of the sheet, upon which is written 'Appendix'. January 12th 1888' and 'fresh diagram ... 12', the latter only partially visible.
